The year 2023 is going by quickly enough ! Before we know it, we see a quarter gone by. It worries me , with much to be done , apprehensive about not making enough progress !
Every month has seen some some cataclysmic event of sorts in the country starting with Joshimath at the beginning of the year. An incidence of subsidence of a whole town of twenty thousand people is not something you hear often . This is my first in all of my adult life... could be in yours too. Yet ! there is a complete silence on the ecology front from the government - in terms of any change in policy or a vision for Himalayas in the context of climate change and human activity. We got a little angry on that count and wrote about it in our editorial piece last month . Do let us know what you think, once you read that article in full.
We covered the union budget and its implication on sustainability and the environment for India. Do read our detailed coverage of the same.
An announcement of a Lithium Bounty in Jammu and Kashmir got us all excited. What does this mean for India ? From an importer of this crucial raw material for rechargeable batteries , can the country finally become a producer of batteries for Electric Vehicles and other application . Not so fast ! we are told! Can things and technology change in the meanwhile .Will the battery makers switch to something else? what is the government planning on this find of mineral deposit ? Will they just auction it to private players and look to collect revenue or will there be a serious vison statement.
Another news which made headlines was the Adani group's capitulation on an unimaginable scale . Why is this important in India's quest for transformation to green ? It is doubly so ! The billionaire Adani is the biggest private player in the fossil fuel driven Indian industry - he runs coal mines , hence produces coal in India and abroad. He transmits power across grids through his transmission business. He runs airports in India's growing aviation sector .He runs crucial ports across the coast lines of the Indian peninsula , which receive bulk of the shipments of coal , oil and gas. Second, the Adani group has committed its biggest investments to the rising Green Energy sector, alongside India's ambitious renewable energy plan. What happens on all these fronts for the nation and of course for the environment?
Would love to hear from you on all of the above. Do write to me on editor@greenstoryventures.com . Have a good month ahead !
